This year was a tough one for natural disasters, political unrest, gun violence, and more. So we’re dropping into Savasana to close it out and officially dubbing it 2017’s most necessary “Pose of the Year.” Sometimes the only thing to do is break out of the flow, slow down, and go inward. Here, YJ influencers and yogis from around the web share why they agree…
“A lot of feelings can float to the surface during and after your yoga practice. Taking a moment to rest in Savasana is an invaluable time to pause, breathe, and allow your body to process both your joy and your sorrow with curiosity and compassion. It’s an opportunity to find clarity and peace in the chaos of this world.”

“Savasana (Corpse Pose) looks easy from the outside and yet it’s actually one of the hardest for most of us to truly master. Inviting the body and mind to let go and surrender into the earth allows the parasympathetic nervous system to activate, bringing us into a deep state of relaxation, rest and repair.”
—YJ Influencer Sofiah Thom
“While you do asana, parts of you that you’re not even consciously aware of are learning. After a yoga practice, Savasana is an opportunity for your nervous system to integrate everything that it learned, and for your body to uptake all of the sweetness of your practice. And, from a purely anatomical standpoint, when you rest in anatomic neutral, it allows your body to cool and reform in a shape that supports better ergonomics once you stand up and begin moving around again.”
—YJ Influencer Erica Mather
“Savasana provides us with a time to let go. A time not always afforded to us with the current lifestyles we live. A time of our own.”
—YJ Influencer Jeffrey Posner
“Many of us constantly run around, multi-task, and process so many visual and verbal messages that we have become ‘human-doings’ rather than ‘human beings.’ We need to consciously take moments like Savasana where we unplug ourselves like we do our computers, fully surrender, just be, and savor the fruits of our labor both and off the mat.”
—YJ Influencer Laura Burkhart
“In our time in history, with so much technology and distractions, Savasana is the most important pose to nourish, restore and connect us to the simple gift of stillness and relaxation. Our nervous system resets, and we have a calm awakening to what’s truly important—our health and wellbeing.”
—YJ Influencer Hemalayaa
“Sometimes your Savasana is in a beautiful, quiet studio with perfect low lighting… and sometimes it’s in your one-year-old’s playroom while she makes as much noise as she can.”
“Sometimes I use sense memories of the immense luminosity and transitional ease of nature in Savasana. I bring the feeling of moments spent outside, at peace, into my neurology… The real skill is calling up this type of vibe anywhere… to observe and direct consciousness in a way that creates calm.”
—YJ Influencer Benjamin Sears
“Chilling in savasana on the beautiful NC Coast.”
“For many, 2017 has proven challenging, which only invokes growth. Savasana should be the pose of the year, giving us the opportunity to revisit ourselves time after time, to recalculate, recalibrate, and reassess truly what’s needed and remind us that we are home. The more we can revisit ourselves in a pose like Savasana, taking a moment of time, space, and silence, the more we can find personal stability in the external world. That’s when the magic happens.”
—YJ Influencer Meredith Cameron
“’You are strong enough to soften.’ This is my Inspired Relaxation. Deeply resting with my 5-year-old yogi sleeping on me.”
“Savasana is one of the most important poses to spend time in during a yoga practice because it offers the body and mind the exact opposite of it’s general habit, which is to be busy, moving around, constantly doing something about everything. Savasana removes the doing, and allows for the undoing. It’s important that we learn this skill (which is ironically an unlearning) in our culture today so that we can stay connected to the body’s innate understanding of its own medicinal properties and ability to return to a state of harmony with itself and others without always interfering.”

“‘As you rest deeply in the cradle of the Earth'”
“Let…. It…. Go….
Let go of the ways
you thought life would unfold,
the holding of plans or dreams
or expectations – Let it all go. …
Save your strength to swim with the tide.
The choice to fight what is here before you now will only result in struggle, fear, and desperate attempts to flee from the very energy you long for.
… Let go.
Let it all go and flow with the grace that washes through your days whether you received it gently or with all your quills raised to defend against invaders.
Take this on faith; the mind may never find the explanations that it seeks, but you will move forward nonetheless.
Let go, and the wave’s crest will carry you to unknown shores, beyond your wildest dreams or destinations.
Let it all go and find the place of rest and peace, and certain transformation.
—Danna Faulds “Let it Go”
“While there are many different schools of asana practice, most, if not all, classes end in Savasana, Corpse Pose. This shape invites us to surrender deeply, to relax fully, and to allow for the benefits of the movement practice to take root and rise. As well, Savasana reminds us that everything is temporary, including our very lives. Realizing the precious, precarious nature of existence is the ultimate invitation to life.”
